About this estimator

A useful starting point, before a sales conversation.

Five questions about your address, bill, ownership, shade and roof age give you an estimated system cost, electricity bill reduction and cash purchase payback. See the result without giving us contact details.

You can then refine usage with a bill, save the estimate, or ask us to find an installer for your address. An installer must confirm roof measurements, site conditions and a final price. Submitting the introduction form authorizes us to share your details with one selected installer and request a written review by email.

Common questions

Do I have to give a phone number to see my solar estimate?
No. The system size, net cost, monthly saving, payback year and verdict all appear on screen at the end of the questions. If you request help finding an installer, both email and phone are required. No contact details are required just to see your estimate.
Is this solar calculator free?
Yes, and there is no account, no trial and no paid tier. It is free because it only earns anything on the small share of homeowners who get a good result and choose to go further.
Will it tell me if solar is a bad idea for my house?
Yes. A cheap electricity rate, heavy shade, an old roof, or a small bill can all make solar a loss, and the result page says so plainly rather than steering you to a salesperson.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a model, not a quote. Production comes from NREL sun hours for your location with standard system losses applied, price per watt from state installed-cost data, and savings from your state's residential electricity rate. Uploading your actual bill replaces the estimated usage with your real usage and tightens the numbers considerably.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home solar?
Not for homeowners. The 30% residential clean energy credit under IRC Section 25D ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Some states and utilities still run their own programs, and those are the only incentives this estimator subtracts.
